Welcome to Old Downtown Palm Harbor Florida.....or should I call it Sutherland? What we today refer to as 'Old Downtown Palm Harbor' was first established back in 1888. The name Sutherland was short for the Southern Land & Development Company. The area was given this name at the time that a post office was granted to the area and the railroad came to town. In 1925 the name was again changed to Palm Harbor Florida.
Palm Harbor Florida today covers a large area on both sides of Lake Tarpon. Old Downtown Palm Harbor refers specifically to the old Sutherland area. It is an area between Alternate 19 to the west and Belcher Road to the east. This is the area that was originally settled and it consists of a combination of old 1950's and 60's homes together with some newer construction.
Old Downtown Palm Harbor is zoned for some of the best schools in the county. It is home to numerous shops and restaurants. It is an 'old Florida' neighborhood, where people watch out for each other and people talk to each other in the street or at the local watering hole over a cup of coffee or a bottle of something stronger.
There is a real sense of community in Old Downtown Palm Harbor and perhaps that is why homes don't stay on the market long. Convenient to Honeymoon Island State Park, the Pinellas Trail and Wall Springs Park, this is a great place to call home.
