Doggie doors are NOT something I would recommend on any home! A good friend of mine had her home broken into a little over a week ago and the point of entry was a doggie door! Home invaders used the easy way in.
I do realize that this is a convenience that many take advantage of but no matter where you live, it is an invitation to have your home broken into. A fenced in yard doesn't help either...........my friend has a backyard that is totally fenced in. I doubt that the thieves knew that there was a doggie door there until they happened upon it. They had first attempted entering through a window but found it was not possible.
Needless to say, the dogs were traumatized, as was my girlfriend and her daughter. Thank heaven, they were not there but when they returned home they found that their dogs were in an agitated state and it looked as if the intruders had used a broom to fight the dogs off.
I have had dogs and really would never recommend a doggie door unless the dog is one of those little things the size of a cat. But even then, another friend had a small doggie door for her cats and found a mama raccoon with her babies in the house stairwell one night.............the mama raccoon was not happy to find humans and less happy that the humans wanted her to leave.
Conclusion: Don't put in a doggie or cat door! Just play it safe!
