Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a fantastic summer destination! Where else can you visit with Winter, the star dolphin from the movie Dolphin Tale? This adorable little dolphin was found wrapped in crab trap line back in 2006. Unable to get free, the dolphin was rescused off the coast of Cape Canaveral, on the Atlantic Coast, and brought to Clearwater Marine Aquarium for lengthly rehabilitation.
Her injuries were so bad that Winter (as she was later named) lost her entire tail as well as two vertebrae. The chances of survival were slim, yet this amazing creature beat all odds and not only survived, she thrived! With determination, she has grown to well over two hundred pounds and can now feed herself.
Thanks to Dr Mike Walsh and Hanger Prosthetics and Orothotics, Inc., Winter has been fitted with a prosthetic tail that she now masters use of like an old pro. There have been many improvements to Winter's tail through the years and thanks to a team that never gave up, this beautiful sea mammal can look forward to a bright future.
In 2011 the movie Dolphin Tale came out. It was all about Winter the dolphin at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. During the filming, the aquarium was closed so that the filming crew and the actors could get the movie completed without disruption from curious fans. The result was a truly amazing and inspirational film!
Winter will remain at home here in Clearwater Florida, waiting for young and old alike to come and visit. If you have not been in to see this amazing dolphin, you really need to make the trip. What better way to teach our kids that you never give up and that with determination, almost anything is possible! I truly recommend a visit to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, located on Island Estates in Clearwater Florida. This is one summer destination you do not want to miss!
